I was doing some housework when the question of how many books did I borrow in 2011, popped in my head.

To answer the question it is: 44.

Actually let me rephrase that. It's 44 books that I borrowed and completed. There are a heap more I started but had to return. I will borrow them again, just in a more realistic fashion.

Here is what those 44 books looked like:

Where has the time gone?

I can't believe it's the second to last week in January. I mean, wow. I've been busy doing courses and guess what has suffered. Yep, reading. In the last week I've gone to bed and gotten out of bed without reading anything, which is totally unlike me.

If you look at my counter on the left hand sidebar, I've only read ONE book for the year so far. That's depressing, if not realistic for what's happening ATM.

I haven't really studied what I want to read for each challenge, and I think I need to plan a little more this year to accomplish them, rather than winging it.

My first step to this is to state a book or author I will read for each challenge. It may not be straight away but at least by writing it down, the intent is there.

Okay, so:

December reads & 2011 Challenges Update

I thoroughly enjoyed every single one of these books.

Moon Called by Patricia Briggs
This is the first book of the Mercedes (Mercy) Thompson series. Mercy is a character with a complicated background who is a coyote shifter but was raised by wolves. I liked the rhythm of this story and the two men in her life - Adam and Sam. I wonder how their triangle is going to play out. I will definitely be continuing one with the series.

One Night With The Wolf by Anna Hackett
This was one hot short story. Filled with passion, intrigue, and alpha wolves - both male and female. What more can you ask for?

Demon Hunts by C.E. Murphy
Book 5 of the Walker Papers. I really enjoyed seeing Joanne get more in tune with her powers, even though she's still stumbling along. Love the cast of characters. Great to see an old character come back.

His Captive Lady by Anne Gracie
Book 2 of the Devil Riders Series. I absolutely loved this and loved the characters. Especially loved the banter between the Devil Riders and Harry and his Aunt. Anne has a wonderful writing style that takes you away into the world of Regency.

Captive by Christina Phillips

Absolutely fantastic. Great setting of ancient Britain with the occupation by Rome. Great characters. HAWT read. Book two of the Forbidden series. Looking forward to book 3.

And now for the final tally of the 2011 Challenges. I have the lists for each challenge at the Past Challenges page. But here is a summary of how I went.

100+ Challenge - I read 74 books (so not reached but I'm really happy with what I did do).

Speculative Fiction Challenge - 13 books read (min 12). Therefore, completed!

Horror & Urban Fantasy - 12 out of 24 books read. Halfway done.

Mystery & Suspense - 4 out of 12 books read. 1/3 way done.

Stephen King Challenge - 1 out of 6 books read. Completely bombed out.

Romance Challenge - This was my own personal challenge and I read 21 out of 24 books - so ALMOST there. This challenge was helped along by my new column on Eleni's Taverna called Writing Buddies Wednesdays. Most were my writing buddies.

I have a great many books part read so I have already made a start to the new year.

Eleven at once - yes, I am a bit all over the place, but this helps me feel like I'm moving forward with my TBR pile and works for with my CFS brain. I borrow library books but don't try to finish them as I renew or I place a hold to get it again. This is the second time I've borrowed both books. I have more waiting. I mark where I am and then continue when I next get the book.

Normal? What's that? I am in no way 'normal' with my reading.

I'm hoping to get to more craft of writing books this year, and I'm thinking more books on design as well. I have been 'reading' Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac for a long time. Sort of snippets here and there.

Another challenge

Well, you knew it was coming, right? Another challenge.

The latest one I've found is the Steampunk Reading Challenge from Dark Faerie Tales.

I'll probably start at the lowest level and see how I go. That is the Gaslight level with 6 books to read. This challenge is different as they have a reading list.

I have one in my TBR pile and am currently reading Behemoth (well it's a library copy that I get and read a bit and return when it's due).

I also have ones that aren't on the list, but may be added as the year goes on. Not sure how that works out.

November Reads

November wasn't a busy month in regards to reading many books, but I at least finished off two.

The Rebel by J.R. Ward
Writing as Jessica Bird, this romance held humour, and raw pain as a bed & breakfast owner struggles to keep what has been in her family for generations. A new chef hobbles into her life, challenging her as no-one has before. Thoroughly enjoyed. Has the same wit, and insights to people as her paranormal romances do. And the romance between the two characters is lovely.

Tempt The Devil by Anna Campbell
The Queen of Regency Noir has done it again. Another notorious courtesan gets caught up with a man who challenges her every step of the way. Both have hurts in the past, and together they start to heal. This is not as dark as the first two of Anna's books (Claiming the Courtesan, Untouched), but is still full of deep emotion. Thoroughly enjoyed.

I'm pleased to say I've hit the 70 book mark. Yay.

I hope to finish off at least a couple of more books by the end of the year, but I'm very happy with this result. Not as much as last year, which I think I read a few more graphic novels and shorter works.

20 days to go. Only time will tell.

2012 Challenges

Yes, I know I haven't finished the challenges for this year. But different blogs are now starting to put up sign-up pages for their challenges.

A new one this year is the Australian Women's Writers Challenge.

"This challenge hopes to help counteract the gender bias in reviewing and social media newsfeeds that has continued throughout 2011 by actively promoting the reading and reviewing of a wide range of contemporary Australian women's writing."

I personally tend to read a lot of books by women authors, especially Australian authors that are part of the romance community, but I want to extend that to the crime, and spec fiction markets, and even mainstream books.

I'm going for the Devoted Eclectic challenge to help me broaden my reading, as well as for Franklin-fantastic number of 10 books with 4 having to be reviewed. It's the reviewing part that I've been finding hard to keep up with, so this is a good thing to help me keep me on track.

Next up is the Horror & Urban Fantasy Challenge...

I haven't done that great at this challenge this year. So far, I've read 11 books out of 24, so not even half. I'm going for the same amount next year, and will be aiming to broaden to more horror as well.

Mystery& Suspense is another challenge where I haven't done that well in. I've read 4 out of 12 books, so a third of the way through. Again I'll aim for 12 next year.

One I should be able to do is the new Speculative Romance challenge. There are four levels to choose from. I'll aim for the Three Sexy Vampires one, which is 18 books.

So another busy year lined up. I'll probably continue to add all books to the 100+ challenge I will set myself (the site hosting this year will no longer be doing reviews or challenges). And as for the romances - I may make that a Writing Buddy Challenge - to read as many books as I can by my writing buddies. I'd love to read about 24, so I'll put that down as my initial aim. I'll come up with a logo by the time it starts...I hope.

I'm thinking of also continuing the Stephen King Challenge as I have only read one this year.

As always, these may be goals and I will work towards them, but I will not stress about reading. Reading for me is about enjoyment, so if I'm not going to rush through them just for the sake of finishing these challenges.

Challenges Update

It took me longer to get to this than I thought.

I have been reading more romance lately what with the Writing Buddy Wednesday posts and trying to catch up on TBR reading of those authors.

Because of this I am now at 17/24 read for the Romance Challenge. Up by 6. So a good effort there.

I'm one up on the Speculative Fiction challenge at 13 (I have reached the min. of 12 with this one if you recall). Up by 1.

I'm up one with the Horror & Urban Fantasy challenge at 10/24. Up by 1.

There has been no change with the Mystery challenge. Still at 4/12.
And no change with the Stephen King Challenge. Still at 1/12.

Currently my reading pile holds

one mystery

I've also started reading American Gods by Neil Gaiman on my iPhone. It is now my waiting room book. So another speculative fiction.

I may not complete the challenges but heck, I'm having fun reading all these books.

My goodness, it's the 9th November and I haven't put up my reads. It's just been rush, rush, rush...

So here we go:

A great month for catching up with my reading and finishing books off. Though the same can't be said for November so far.

As you can see, I'm finishing off books by my writing buddies, which I'm very happy about, as well as other started some time ago. Covet by J.R. Ward is an eBook I have on my phone, which I read mainly in waiting rooms. So it may have taken awhile, but at least those waiting rooms and waiting was not boring.

So far, I have read a total of 67 books this year. I'm reading thicker books and it does make a difference. But each book I read is a bonus, especially as life seems to be as I said, rush, rush, rush.

I hope you find time to read.

I hope to review my challenges soon.

I've made it to 60 books! Woohoo. I may not be reading as fast as I once did, but I think I am doing quite well for my energy levels.

Also with book 60, I have reached the min. 12 books for the Speculative Fiction Challenge.
So a win-win week.

I can't believe it's the 9th October already. Seriously, where has the time flown.

I read / finished the following in September. I am quite pleased with this effort.

Goddess Girls - Persephone the Phony
Book 2 of the Mount Olympus Academy sees Persephone feel like a phony because she feels she has to agree and be nice with everyone. All that gets shaken up when she meets supposed bad boy, Hades. A cool take on Greek mythology and a book that's written well for the kids.

It suited the age group this is aimed for. I would have enjoyed when I was a child.

Penumbra by Keri Arthur
Book 3 of Spook Squad series which ended up being a trilogy. While it wraps up much of the mystery of the first 3 books, the upcoming war is left in the air. I'm not complaining as Keri wrote Riley Jensen and her story. I would have love to see how the characters progressed with the knowledge they have. Great stuff by Keri Arthur.

I reviewed End of the Night Girl in an earlier post, but I will say again that it's brilliant.

You have probably noticed an increased reading of romance genre books, with this month having Rachel Bailey's At the Billionaire's Beck and Call? and Claire Baxter's Her Mediterranean Makeover. I'm loving reading these books more regularly. While I don't write in these styles I appreciate their good stories and the category length. I believe that everything we experience (be it reading, writing, watching tv, taking the dog for a walk) all helps us with our own stories and inspiration. These two ladies are people whom I admire and it's no coincidence that I had them on my Writing Buddy Wednesday column over at Eleni's Taverna. What I have been trying to do is read the the author buddies featured as I go along. So the book goes to the top(ish) part of the TBR pile. It helps me get back to these books and support my friends.

So what am I currently reading from the WBW ~ Tracey O'Hara's Death's Sweet Embrace, and I'm totally loving it. She has such a fantastic style.

Reward book: End Of The Night Girl

Wow, what can I say about the End of the Night Girl other than it is utterly amazing.

"Molly, a sassy waitress, is haunted by the ghost of a murdered Polish Jew. Two novels, each a compelling page-turner, combine teasingly in one as End of the Night Girl explores the shadow cast by the Holocaust across decades, continents and cultures."

It has been a long while that I have read any literary. I'm more of a genre fan, but this was absolutely amazing. Two lives, two stories, but they are tied together. One a creation of the other, but one life more false than the other. Powerful imagery, totally spellbinding. I'm so glad I chose this book as my reward because reading it the way I did, had the book live with me longer. Had me think about it. Yes, it's a tough subject - the Holocaust, as well as the one about identity, but it's a rich book that helps you open your eyes. It doesn't lecture, it doesn't offer advice. Raw emotions spill on the page with majesty of the wordsmith's craft. And Amy is definitely a wordsmith of the highest calibre. I'm very proud of her work and to call her friend. Well done!

Next book...

I go from the deep, emotional look at humanity to something quite altogether different. Growing up, I had the treat of buying Sweet Valley High books and this year saw the return of the series with Sweet Valley Confidential: 10 years later. Which picks up the twins, Elizabeth and Jessica's tale 10 years later. A lighter read I'm sure, but still one I have been waiting to read.

And now it's time to go over my August reads.

The Gunslinger - Dark Tower, 1 by Stephen King
Five stories in one volume. This is a surreal world - post apocolyptic - where the Gunslinger is on the hunt for the Man in Black. He comes across towns, settlements, and a boy on his journey across the desert for what he thinks is his final showdown - and searching the truth for the Dark Tower. I found it a little hard to follow at times - the surreal aspect of it - and a bit disjointed. I think that's what the world is like for the gunslinger. So will continue on to read the second book in the series.

Lover Unleashed - Black Brother Brotherhood, 9 by J.R. Ward

Payne's story and she's mixing it up with a human as well, Dr Manny. I continue to love this series, and loved seeing more of Vishous and Jayne. I love the feeling of family of the Brotherhood, and of course there's the action, the danger, the heartbreak. Such a fantastic take on vampires and love that the guys swear like guys do. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Rapunzel in NY by Nikki Logan

A wonderful category read. It was exactly the book I needed as I waited in a hospital waiting room. Beautifully drawn characters with hang ups about their past and how they start to look outside their spheres. Lovely writing.

Greek Myths by Deborah Locke

Was good to read the Greek Myths in an easy format aimed for kids. Definitely well aimed. Good illustrations.

Take A Chance, issues 1-5, by C.E. Murphy

Great drawings, great story. I enjoyed this series. I read it in the 5 installments instead of the one volume. What happens when an ordinary woman becomes a vigilante? Chance is now faced with superheroes interfering with her job.

Galactic Burn by Mel Teshco

All I can say is hawt, hawt, hawt - should come with a warning label. There is three alien males (they look human) and one VERY satisfied human female. :))

The Ruthless Greek's Virgin Princess by Trish Morey

Well I was lucky enough to be given a dedication in this book. I did enjoy the relationship between Marietta and Yiannis. The perception of one what says, what one thinks and what one does is highlighted in this book. Bravo, Trish.

Her Cattleman's Boss by Barbara Hannay

As usual, Barbara's stories are heartfelt and lovely. I adore Barbara's writing and her stories. I always walk away with emotion stuck in my throat. This one was no different.

50 Books...

For some reason, I have Sesame's Street's The Count in my head counting. 1 book...ha ha ha...2 books...that's 2 books...ha ha... you get the picture.

So I've reached 50 books for the year!
Yes there have been short ones in there, but there have been long ones too. So I think they all balance out.

That means technically I'm halfway to the 100 mark, but I'm not going to worry too much about that. I just want to keep track of what I am reading and how much I'm reading.

I don't really have defined reading schedule. Most days I may read a chapter before I go to bed and another when I wake up. Some days I don't, and others I read more. It depends on how I'm feeling and what else is going on in my life.

And I keep the most important thing about reading in my mind - it should be fun, or at least interesting in the case of research :))

Finally, my July reads.

This was the month of finishing off books I had started a long time back.

Firstly, as in my previous post, I finished A Game of Thrones. Loved it.

I also finished The Ghost Brigades by John Scalzi, Fool Moon by Jim Butcher, and Medalon by Jennifer Fallon.

Looking at all those titles, it looks like it was series month.

But I did read an anthology, a children's book (to Mr 7), and an erotic short story. So my reading was a little bit more diverse.

I feel a little brain dead from a busy week so will not review books individually, but I must say I enjoyed every single one of them.

Now since it's the 6th August, I will give you my challenge update as it now stands...

I've reached the 40 book mark!!!

I finally finished A Game of Thrones. As I said before, I have been savouring this book, reading it bite sized pieces. I had a 100 pages to go yesterday, and so I pushed to finish it. Actually I couldn't sleep, and what better way to pass the night than a great book.

And it was just in time - as the premier of the TV series Game of Thrones starts on Foxtel tomorrow! Yay.

An amazing book, with lots of twists and turns. There was so much I didn't foresee. No spoilers, but those who have read it know what I mean. The wonderful thing is I have more to read of this wonderful tale.

Thank you George R.R. Martin for writing a rich tapestry of characters, on such a grand scale.

The Stone Mage and The Sea by Sean Williams
When I started this originally, while I enjoyed it, I couldn't get into it. A few months later, and reborrowing it from the library, and I was immersed of the world of The Strand, where the Sky Wardens rule. Sal and his father are on the run, and avoid these Sky Wardens, but Sal has no idea why. Until they come to a town, where an old man resides, and he finds out more about himself than he bargained for.

M is for Magic by Neil Gaiman
Gaiman is a real storyteller. In this collection of short stories aimed for children, he mixes genres and styles, but always there is a fascinating story there. Whether it be funny, more creepy, or just weird. I loved the NurseRhymeLand story in the detective noir style, the old lady who found the Holy Grail in her local Oxfam shop, and the story of the stray cat who has more power than it seems.

Her Dark Lord by Mel Teshco

A novella with Nocturne Bites. I enjoyed this story of a half vampire trying to find the Ancient One. Really good world-building, especially with the length. Also hawt. Well done to my DarkSider friend.

Immortal In Death by J.D. Robb

Book 3 of the In Death series featuring Eve Dallas and her beau, Roarke. I love the relationship between these two. Two people with bad pasts who have found eachother. In this book, Eve has a case close to home when her best friend is accused of murder. Eve is tenacious in proving her friend's innocence by being a good above the board cop. The case also brings up some startling memories too. I really enjoy the mystery and suspense in these books.

Leviathan by Scott Westerfeld

Like The Stone Mage and The Sea, when I initially borrowed this book, I read it and liked it but it was slow going. Maybe because I wasn't used to the word usage imagery of the steampunk world. When I reborrowed it, I was able to get into it and the last half of the book flew by. I love the world-building in this - the Darwanist English vs. the Clanker Germans. An history with an alternative what if. It's the first in the series, so am looking forward to seeing where this goes.

Angel's Blood was a great read with a different look at archangels, angels, and vampires.

Elena is a Guild Hunter - and hunts down renegade vampires on behalf of their angel masters. Raphael is the Archangel of New York, and has lived millennia. Both lethal, both strong willed, they have a battle of the wills. On the trail of a killing archangel, they are forced to work together, and both change in the process.

I loved Nalini's style and worldbuilding. I must admit that I really got into it from about chapter four.

The first book of the Guild Hunter series, I'm looking forward to reading more. More mystery to unfold, more action is promised. I will not spoil it, but I'd like to see where the main characters lives go.

Now, for my next choice.

I am really excited about reading this one. I suppose that is what the reward books are all about - working on writing, so I can read these wonderful books.

Last week, I attended the book launch of Amy T. Matthews debut book, End of the Night Girl.

It won the 2010 Arts SA Premier's Unpublished Manuscript Award, and is published by Wakefield Press. We at SARA have been waiting for its release. One thing about having writing friends, there is never a shortage of fantastic books to read.

Well because of my tendency to mix it up quite a bit. I also return books to the library, partly read and then get them back again. I find it helps me move things along.

Club Dead by Charlaine Harris

The third book in the Sookie Stackhouse books. Sookie is looking for the missing Bill, and she questions their relationship. It doesn't help matters that she has an attraction to the werewolf, Alcide. More is revealed about the vampire and were worlds and their politics. Easy read. Enjoyed.

The Disworld Graphic Novels: The Colour of Magic & The Light Fantastic by Terry Pratchett

A fun read of the first two novels in the Discworld books. A good way to refamiliarise myself with the world, before I go to start reading book 3 (I read the first two many many years ago). Nice to see Rincewind, the tourist, and the luggage, again. The Pratchett humour still comes through in this form.

The Day My Bum Went Psycho by Andy Griffiths

The amount of bum jokes and references in this book is hilarious. The whole world has bum alternatives. Zack has to stop his bum from starting a revolution to take over the world. He gets more than he bargained for when he teams up with the B-Team (bum hunters). I couldn't help but laugh with this book. Very clever concept. I'm sure kids would love the potty humour.

The Illiad by Roy Thomas

This is a graphic novel based on Homer's Illiad. I thought the artwork was great, and there was the to-ing and fro-ing I remember from the story (I read Robert Graves' version during my university studies). I would love to see the Odyssey illustrated, as I enjoyed that story more. Still, a good way to read The Illiad without reading hundreds of pages.

Night Play by Sherrilyn Kenyon.

I love this series, and I enjoyed the tale of Vane and Bride. There was more about the Were-Hunters and the two factions. And how could you not love a man/wolf, who is besotted with a woman who is plus size, without making a big deal of it.

Goddess Girls: Athena the Brain by Joan Holub and Suzanne Williams

A modern retelling of the Olympian pantheon, where 12 year old Athena finds out she is a goddessgirl, her father is Zeus, and she's been accepted to go to Mount Olympus academy. While this doesn't follow the traditional tales, I still found it a fun read, and would loved to have read this as a tween.

Plum Lucky by Janet Evanovich

A between the numbers novella, where Diesel makes a reappearance. Grandma has found some lucky money, which doesn't turn out to be lucky at all. The gang - Stephanie, Lula, and Connie make their way to Atlantic City to find grandma. I laughed out loud in so many scenes. I needed a pick me up, and this was definitely the right book for it. I think I also liked it because there wasn't too much angst over the Morelli / Ranger triangle.

I've reached THIRTY items!

Okay, so I'm behind if I want to reach my 100 book goal, but I'm taking it as it comes, and reading bits and pieces of stories, and so it's working for me.

What am I reading:

I'm still enjoying George R.R. Martin's A Game of Thrones. I'm just over halfway, and it's a lovely savoury read. :)

Nalini Singh's Angel's Blood is still my reward book, and I'm about a quarter of the way through. Loving the take on vampires and archangels.

The Stone Mage and The Sea by Sean Williams. I haven't read anything for awhile, so hoping to read more in the coming weeks.

Home Is Where The Bark Is by Kandy Shepherd. I've only just started this, and already, I'm loving it.

Covet by J.R. Ward is on my iPhone, so that gets read when I'm in waiting rooms.

So, how am I going?

Well, while I have been reading, I haven't been finishing as much. I'm continuing to read 'A Game of Thrones'. It's a wonderful book, but I'm savouring it. Yes, I know there is more in the series, but I like reading a few chapters and then reading something else (or snippets of something else).

A whole lot of books came off hold all at once-again. But I haven't got the time, so half of them have gone back unread. I'm looking at the other half and seriously thinking of returning them too. I will see how I go. Reading is for fun, not a chore, and I have so many of my own books to read.

So the run down is:

I can't believe it's a week into May. Time is flying, but my reading is not so much. Though I was happy with my April reads.

Getting Even With Fran by Christine Stinson

Truly a lovely read. A look at the lives of 7 women just before a 30th year high school reunion. There are secrets, lies, betrayal, new love, lost love, difficult relationships - and there is humour in there too. Just a joy to read.

Castles by Colin Thompson
Picture book - different made up castles and object is for reader to see how many kings, queens, princes and princesses they can find. Lovely illustrations.

One Good Knight (Book 2 of The Five Hundred Kingdoms series) by Mercedes Lackey
We follow princess Andromeda in her quest for acceptance to be considered an adult by her mother the Queen. When she shows intelligence in research and matters of state, the Queen is pleased...but then a dragon appears terrorizing the countryside. Only one solution can be found - a virgin must be sacrificed every week until a Champion can arrive. The Tradition maneuvers to bring about the 'traditional path' in the lives of the Five Hundred Kingdoms. But it can be manipulated or steered in another direction. An enjoyable read - and love the dashes of humour here and there.... Bookwyrm!! :)

Wild Ride by Jennifer Crusie and Bob Mayer
An amusement park called Dreamland, five trapped demons, five guardians, one crow - it's all a wild ride. I enjoyed reading this book, but I had to return to the library half way through. Second time around, I read it quite effortlessly. I love the humour of the characters and the way they look at life.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson
A slow start with the word of financial espionage and libel suit against Mikael Blomvkist. He gets an offer to work on a decades old murder and because it has the potential to lead to more info on the espionage, he accepts.

Lisabeth Salander, a freelancer with Milton Security (intelligence reports) is an girl who is unconventional in her looks, her attitude and her social niceties. We see her deal with her work and other personal matters. She's a loner and she is a ward of the state despite being 25.

About the first quarter is interesting but it is in a different style to what I'm used to - it is telling the story in many cases. But especially since we are introduced to Henrik Vanger and his mystery, and also Lisabeth, I was drawn more and more into the story. The last quarter especially has you gasping.

Apparently the Swedish title is Men Who Hate Woman, and that definitely suits the story and the mystery.

Mistral's Kiss by Laurell K. Hamilton (book 5 of The Merry Gentry series)
Merry continues on her journey to stay alive in the Unseelie court. She and her men re-awaken old magic that had been lost. While of course there is some more sex with her guards (so she can get pregnant and therefore be named heir to the Unseelie Court - before her cousin Cel can). Definitely an erotic urban fantasy - I'm wondering if there are any positions left!!!

It is the intrigue of the courts that is fascinating and there is more and more as the book unfolds. The words flow effortlessly making it an easy read, despite all the political intrigue.

Marvel Adventures Fantastic Four Vol 1: Family of Heroes

This was a kid friendly version of the Fantastic Four. Good artwork as usual.

The Avengers: I am an Avenger by Marvel Comics
A collection of comic issues that include the changing of the official Avenger line up. It's really interesting to see it jump and see the changes over the years. Great artwork as you would expect.

Astonishing X-Men: Exogenetic by Warren Ellis

Fab artwork and because I don't read things in order of series, I do ponder over storylines. You can read as a one off though.

Storyteller: Writing Lessons From 27 Years of The Clarion Writers' Workshop by Kate Wilhelm
A really interesting read of two of the lecturers at Clarion. Very interesting of how it got started, and the whole process. And for once I read it without reading anything else (one reason was because I had to return to its owner). Still, it was good to read something on the craft and writing as a topic. I haven't done that in so long.

As you can see I have read more comics - actually, I should say I FINISHED the comics. I have quite a few books in the process of being read. I usually have books at different stages of reading and depending on my mood is what I would read. But with Storyteller, I tended to just to mainly concentrate on that book. And it was good to go back to that for a little bit at least. I'll see how I go.

The Right Chord by Elisabeth Rose

A lovely romance. Grace and Harry get off on the wrong impression from the start, with Grace trying to be more assertive. Add a dog, Woof, who howls when Grace practices (she's in an orchestra), and Harry's cute kid, and there's lots of situations for misunderstandings and confusion.

Love is a Four Legged Word by Kandy Shepherd

I loved this book. It made me laugh with Brutus, the millionaire mutt. Will definitely reading more of Kandy's books.

There were so many tongue-in-cheek things I loved it's hard to list them all, but must say the romance between Maddy and Tom is just so lovely. And the best pack ending!! :)

Generation 18 by Keri Arthur (Spook Squad, Book 2)

This is the second book in the Spook Squad series and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I love the futuristic setting, the characters (Gabriel - mmmm), and the storyline. Sam is still trying to piece together where she comes from. She and Gabriel have lots of tension but he pushes her away afraid she will be killed. And there is a mysterious man she meets and is in her dreams too...someone she doesn't know if she can trust but who knows all about her and her past. He's just not saying...

The Arrival by Shaun Tan

This is a book devoid of any words but the pictures speak enough for it. The story of immigrants going into another country. I see familiar faces really, having been a daughter of immigrants, but also the photographs of family as they were when they first arrived in Australia. Such a lovely book in sepia tones. I can say there was emotion stuck in my throat 'reading' the stories in there. Fantastic artwork as usual. Making everything both familiar and unfamiliar.

Oh btw - Shaun won an Oscar for Best Short Animated Film for The Lost Thing. Fantastic news!!! I've read the book but haven't seen the movie.

Night of the Living Trekkies by Keith David Anderson & Sam Stall

It’s sci-fi/horror – zombie book set at a Star Trek convention. Much fun had with the two genres and of course it was funny. There was even Star Wars references shown in. I actually picked up this book from the library because of the Book trailer....it's gold.

Shaun of the Dead (Graphic Novel)

Adaptation of the movie. Still laughed at bits (even though I've seen the movie) and the art work is very good. Didn't realise they had put this out until I spotted in my library.

Glory in Death by J.D. Robb (In Death, Book 2)

The second of the Eve Dallas and Rourke series. Again great writing and I was able to move along with this story quickly. I love the relationship between these characters. Both are from unloving backgronds and it's nice to see them have comfort in each other. I shall be continuing with the next book.

The Secret Countess by Eva Ibboston

I started to find the rhythm about a 1/2 way through the book as there were more and more interactions. And of course with the introduction of Muriel, who I didn't like from the start.

The Gift by Cecilia Ahern

Lou is a man who is busy, busy, busy. You want to strangle him for being so clueless about his family but as time he grows on you as you see the doubts creep in and him realising what is important. While people may say this is cliche, it is something that makes you think about the way we spend our time. And really with the world seeming to speed up on us, this is a good thing - to think.

At Twilight by Maggie Shayne
This is books 4 (Beyond Twilight) & 5 (Born in Twilight) from the Wings of The Night series. You don't really need to read the others to understand what is going on. There's little bits of information that is repeated, such as certain mortals having a rare gene that allows them to become vampires. And characters that reoccur but you don't really need their back story to follow it. I quite enjoyed the two stories and the way vampirism is handled. I'll read the previous books and then start from book 6 again.

House of Cards by C.E Murphy

Book 2 of The Negotiator Trilogy. I must say I enjoyed the rhythm of this book more than the first one. Oh don't get me wrong, the first one was good, but I thought it was better in this one. Margrit continues to be involved with the Old Races- and while on one side she wants things to be normal, on the other she loves the thrill of it also.

Maybe This Time by Jennifer Crusie

I loved this book and the writing - the humour always makes me laugh in Jenny Crusie's books and I love the rhythms of her scenes. She does things we are not told to do like say 'she thought' but she makes it works and I think who cares re those conventions. Her dialogue is witty and fun, and you you wonder if there ARE ghosts in the house or if it all a hallucination. Not to mention an ex-husband and wife who have never gotten over each other despite the ten years apart. It's a fantastic read.

The Dead of the Night by John Marsden

A great continuation to Tomorrow When The War Began. What I like about it is that is frank - the characters question, they are teenagers who are scared and tired, and they act REAL. And so while there's a lot of planning, a lot of talking and a lot of thinking, it feels right. Will definitely continue with this series.

2010 reads overview

I had a great year last year with my reading. I don't think there was one item that I didn't enjoy reading. Yes, some took longer than others to get through, but that is more about me than the books, I believe.

It's difficult to say which were my favourite books. Different styles and voices and I love variation.

Still Highlights were:

* reading debut books by writing buddies

* reading more graphic novels (comics), including starting the legendary series, The Sandman by Neil Gaimain. I also had a X-Men kick, starting with Joss Whedon's contribution to the series. And I loved seeing The Dark Hunters and Twilight in graphic form. As well as the crew from Joss Whedon's Firefly/Serenity.

*Being introduced to the fabulous world of writer and artist Shaun Tan, and managed to get a book signing at WorldCon. I thoroughly enjoyed The Lost Thing and read it for the first time to my godson.

* Starting a number of book series.

* listening to an audio book

* finishing off the Riley Jensen Guardian series by Keri Arthur

* reading Xinran's Miss Chopsticks. A fascinating look at Chinese culture through the eyes of three sisters from the country. I read this because I needed the letter X for an A-Z author challenge. A very different style but fascinating.

* funniest book - Dogs & Goddesses. Loved this collaboration.

* the most emotionally charged book - One Small Miracle.

* favourites in series already started

What a year. I'm hoping 2011 will another great one and so far it has been.

I know what an awful thought. No, it's that I just needed to rest by not reading. To let the CFS fatigued brain have a breather. So I will not be stressing about the number of books this year as I have in the last month.

But as you all know, my TBR pile is getting worse than better, so I'm trying to at least go through it. This is why I will not be undertaking the library challenge as such (though looking at the amount of books I have borrowed from the library, it will probably end up as a separate list anyway *wink*).

Thanks to the library, I have been introduced to many new authors (well new authors to me) and hence I will continue to borrow but not aim for a figure. I shall report at the end of the year how much ended up being borrowed though.

Romance Reading Challenge 2011

Well this is a challenge for me. If anyone wants to join, they are welcome. Because I'm not exactly a review site in the normal sense, I haven't anything to give away for this nor have a sign up page. So it's for the love of reading.

My challenge is to read 24 romance novels - either category or single title.

I have many of these on my TBR shelf and of course many friends who write romance.

So 2011 is shaping up to be a good year to tackle my To Be Read piles.

Book Chick City Speculative Fiction Challenge - target reached!!

Yes, I have reached my target of 24 books - and I have a few extras I'm adding as I go along. I am surprised it took me so long to complete but then again, I was not adding Graphic Novels which almost all were speculative in nature. And I have varied my reading. I'm going to take up this challenge again next year, but the min. is only 12 novels so I hope to get to that number earlier.

It's all about me clearing out my TBR piles, so I will be happy with whatever I get. :)

Reward book: Forbidden

Well what can I say about Forgiven. Lots really. It's steamy - very steamy, which you would expect from an erotic romance story. It's set at around 50AD - so love the ancient historical aspect. It's set in Wales (or Cymru as it was known then by the natives, Cambria by the Romance) when the Roman invasion has just hit. Carys, a Druid is in hiding but she meets a Roman centurion, Maxiumus, who she lusts after, who lusts after her. But over the course of the book, they have deep regard for the other, finally realising they are in love.

But since their peoples are enemies, all seem against them. How can they be together if it means betraying one or the other, or each other? The story is woven nicely together, and the antagonist - oh goodness, he is just scary - & no-one knows.

I loved learning more about the Druid belief in the goddesses, and the differences with Roman culture and the treatment of women.

5/5 for sure in my opinion. The next book in the series is Captive, which will be out in February 2011. Looking forward to it greatly. We have already met the heroine in this book, Carys' friend Morwyn. She's a tough character and can't wait to get to know her more.

Now for my next reward book - Angels' Blood by Nalini Singh. It's the first of the Guild Hunter series and I've been looking forward to it. I finally met Nalini at the RWAus's conference in Coogee this year, and she is so lovely.

It's almost the end of November and time is ticking away for the challenges. I'm not stressing about it but I would like to complete some.

So how far off am I?

Well I have completed one of the Harlequin challenges - the mini-series one. 24 books read but I'm still adding more if it goes into this category. I'm actually at 31 for this.

I think I've been doing pretty well. Even if I don't make the 100, I'm very happy with what I have done so far. I have a couple of kids book on the pile too, and a couple of graphic novels. They all add up.

Changing the pace

I just finished reading 'The Next Accident' by Lisa Gardner. This is book 3 of the Pierce Quincy/Rainie Conner books, though book 1 doesn't feature Rainie at all.

This is the way a thriller should be written. Keeping the reader guessing. Who? What? Where? How? Very fascinating stuff, and very emotional too. Poor Quincy - someone has it out for him. First it's his eldest daughter who dies (presumably in a car accident)...and then well, his life gets turned upside down.

It's been awhile since I read a thriller and the ease of Lisa Gardner's writing takes you into the story. I'm glad to come back out again because that is not a world I'd like to live in all the time. Nope, not for me. But I will read the next book in the series for sure- The Killing Hour.

Reward book: Untouched

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Anna has such a lovely style and voice.

Blurb:

A very sensual read-and full of strong emotions. As Matthew is a man who had been called mad, he overcomes his own fears with Grace's help. It really is heart-wrenching to see how badly he has been treated by his uncle, and Grace's story of living a hard life after she is disowned by her family is also very touching.

Anna Campbell is a great story teller. Set in a remote manor, there is nothing stale about being in the one location for practically the whole book. This is the second book of hers I have read and I will continue to read more. :)

Next reward book.....

I decided to pick Christina Phillips' Forbidden. I have been waiting since Christina announced her sale to read this book. About the forbidden love between a Roman Centurion and a Druid priestess, this is an ancient historical romance I am itching to read and will definitely be working hard to get to. :))

September Reads

With August and September being conference months, my reading has indeed suffered but still I managed a few in September - though 4 out of 7 are graphic novels :) Still it goes to my count, and thoroughly enjoyable especially The Twilight Volume 1 and The Dark Hunters Vol 1

After having finished the first book in the Outback Baby Tales by Melissa James, I read book 2 by Michelle Douglas and book 3 by Nikki Logan. Both wonderful books. All different in styles but it suited as each heroine was a different type of person. Well done ladies.

And as I mentioned before I finished Moon Sworn - the last of the Riley Jensen books.

And I've reached the 50 book mark for the 100+ reading Challenge. Yay me!

For the BCC challenge, I am almost at the 20 book mark. I'm not counting graphic novels in this and so it is taking longer as I try and vary my reading.

For the Support Your Library challenge, I have reached over the half way mark for the Just My Size challenge 27 books out of 50. However I have reached the amount for the Mini Challenge, so that is something.

Harlequin challenge - The Mini-series challenge - I have met the target of 24, so whatever I add now is a bonus.

Riley Jensen Guardian series

Book 9 and series finale

I have finally reached the end of this series and boy what an ending. I shall not spoil it for others, but let me say I was totally satisfied with where Riley ended up. I had a big goofy grin on my face.

Oh come on, you don't think she deserves a happy ending after the hell she was put through for 9 books.

I loved the growth of Riley's character and the change in her outlook in life. She had some crazy adventures, battles some evil characters, and proved she was a survivor.

Thanks to Keri Arthur for such a great series and I loved it more with each book, the last couple were absolute doozies.

If you haven't read these books and you enjoy dark urban fantasy with werewolves, vampires, a kick butt heroine, a gorgeous vampire (sigh, Quinn), action, intrigue, lust, love, betrayal and everything in between, then go ahead an read Riley's story.

I managed to get my Carrie Vaughn, Shaun Tan books (one is a gift), Gail Carriger, and John Scalzi signed. I also got book plates for Nicole Murphy and Rowena Cory Daniells. So I did quite well.

Ah the joys of conferences and conventions. :))

I really don't need to take a trip to the library but you know, I always seem too go. I'm like a kid in the lolly store.

Now to build the time stopper so I can pause time to be able to read everything I want to!!

Support Your Local Library - 22 books out of 50 books read. This is the higher end challenge. I'm almost to the lower challenge of 25 books and I'll be happy with that.

Count down - 28 out of 55 read

A-Z Author - 18 out of 24 read

The explosion of the TBR pile

A slow month with reading, but still managed a few books.

I loved Soulless by Gail Carriger, a comedy of errors in the Victorian era with paranormal elements.

Again Melissa James knocked it out of the emotional depth park with One Small Miracle. Just wow!

In my previous blog post, I mentioned I'd finally read J.D Robb - & yes another enjoyable read.

Graphic novels this month was a wonderful final chapter of Batman (before they started from #1 again) by Neil Gaiman, and the next volume of Astonishing X-Men by Warren Ellis. Though it doesn't follow from Joss Whedon's (from what I can tell, but I've probably messed up the order as there are more than one X-Men).

And a non-fiction book designed for teachers to discuss fantasy work in their classrooms with a book aptly named Fantasy.

Finally... J.D. Robb

Yes, I finally starting reading the J.D. Robb series In Death, with book one, Naked in Death. Wow what a punch this book wallops. Gritty and emotional, it had me on the edge of my seat. I will continue reading about Lt. Eve Dallas and her beau Roarke.

Oh and yes, I am intrigued by Roarke :))

I had a great month of reading in June. I finished off my reward book of Shadowfae, read new authors - Helene Young and Lauren Kate, caught up on a Twilight installment, and started catching on my e-TBR pile with Anna Hackett's novella Wind Kiss, Fire Bound.

Each was different and I enjoyed that immensely- though 4 out of the 5 were speculative fiction, they were all different in tone, world building, length, and voice.

Shadowfae is a dark urban fantasy dealing with the supernatural underground of Melbourne. Lust, power, passion & love live in this world. The story is about Jade, a thrall and succubus. Love the first person POV for her, and the 3rd person, present tense for the other characters. Very lyrical language - very well done & a fantastic choice as a Reward Book. This book is part one of a series. Now to get book 2, Shadowglass.

My next choice for the Reward book is Untouched by Anna Campbell. I've been wanting to read this for a long time!!

Loved this book. Loved the beginning lines, just hooked me right in until the end. Great story and great world-building. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Dance With the Devil by Sherrilyn Kenyon (A Dark Hunter Novel) - Paranormal Romance

Oh poor Zarek - what a tortured soul he is. I liked discovering his tenderness and the different layers being peeled back. More questions about Acheron. Great book - though initially the POV changes were abit jolty but after awhile I got the feel for them and then didn't notice them. Definitely will be reading more of this series.

The Curse of Dracula by Marv Wolfman - Graphic Novel

This was well, graphic. Into the horror style. Enjoyed.

Plum Lovin' by Janet Evanovich - Mystery Detective (humour)

Enjoyed this - Diesel pops up again and the match-making is funny. Thoroughly enjoyed.

Astonishing X-men Vol 3: Torn by Joss Whedon & John Casaday - Graphic Novel

Another good installment in these volumes (volumes are made up of a number of issues, so I'm getting it in one hit instead).

Claiming His Bought Bride by Rachel Bailey - Silhouette Desire - Romance

What a fabulous debut by Ms Rachel Bailey!! A wonderful person whom I admire very much. Thoroughly LOVED it and the second chance theme. Way to go!

Review of this book here. It is the pick of the month.

The Book of Tomorrow by Cecelia Ahern - Women's fiction

Intriguing book and characters, with some you're not sure what to make of. A good read.

Rachel Bailey debut book

Bootcamp mum, Rachel Bailey had her first release hit the Australian shelves in February. I've just finished reading Claiming His Bought Bride it and LOVED it. I love the lovers reunited theme and Rachel's 'voice'. Perfect for Desire. The characters of Lily and Damon had much angst from their backgrounds and it was wonderfully woven into the story.

Walking Dead by C.E. Murphy - Urban Fantasy

A thoroughly enjoyable read. I'm finding Joanne's journey is getting better and better. I love her wit and sarcasm, and that despite that when she's scared, she can scream like a little girl. LOL. And her relationship with Morrison & the other characters (Gary, Billy, Mel) is wonderful. Can't wait for book 5!

Executive Mother-To-Be -by Nicola Marsh - Harlequin Romance

Thoroughly enjoyed

Hot Boss, Wicked Nights by Anne Oliver - HM&B Sexy Sensation

Phew, what a wickedly sensational book. Damon and Kate certainly steam up the pages, and fall in love in the process.

Deadly Desire by Keri Arthur - Dark Urban Fantasy

Oh this one was a real goodie to read. Investigation, passion, attraction....& more. Two more books in the series to go. Can't wait to see how this story goes...

The Greek Boss's Demand by Trish Morey - Harlequin Presents

This has been on my TBR pile for years!! I've read some of Trish's later work but not the book that started it all. Finally read and enjoyed.

Drawing Faces by Rosie Dickins and Jan McCafferty - Non-Fiction - Children's

An introduction to drawing faces for children or those wanting to go back to basics. Great overview.

Iron Soldiers: a story of arms & armour by Dave Luckett - Non-Fiction - Children's

Told from the POV of a blacksmith's business changing over time in regards to armour and how it was made. Interesting.

So that's it for February.

I'm still reading 'Sizzle, Seduce & Simmer' for my reward book and it's making me hungry (cooking is a big part of the stories).

Great story. This is the first X-men comic I have read and so not sure what the complete backstory is (helps abit to have watched the movies).

Lights, Camera...Kiss The Boss by Nikki Logan (debut book!) - Harlequin Romance
I LOVED this book & it's written by someone I very much admire. You wouldn't think it was a debut book - honestly, it just flowed so well & kept me entertained. It does have a nature theme but it's very cleverly woven into the story & tied to the characters. We will be seeing much more of Nikki Logan, no doubt.

Breaking Dawn by Stephenie Meyer - YA - Paranormal romance

Twelve Sharp by Janet Evanovich - Mystery/ Humour
I enjoy reading this series but I do have to be in the mood. The triangle between Stephanie, Morelli & Ranger is getting a little on the 'old' side. But the humour and the way Stephanie always seems to get into trouble make up for that. And the secondary characters are a scream.

Astonishing X-men Vol 2: Dangerous by Joss Whedon & John Cassaday - Comic

A good continuation of the story.

The Morcai Battalion by Diana Palmer - Science Fiction

I really like the premise of this and I did enjoy the characters. I just felt it jumped around with the character's perspectives. I'm interested in reading the rest of the series though.

Favourite was....drum roll....

Nikki Logan's Lights, Camera...Kiss The Boss

The cover left is the Australian/New Zealand version that will hit the shelves in March.

Reward book: Breaking Dawn

Yes, people would say I am behind the times as I finally finished reading The Twilight Saga's last book, Breaking Dawn.

I've tried to stay aware from they hype of The Twilight Saga & have read them because I have enjoyed them. Twilight was introduced to me & the Bootcampers by fellow Bootcamper Dana. And I was drawn in. It's not fast paced but at the same time I felt the book speed along, thoroughly immersed in Bella's world.

Breaking Dawn concludes the four part series. I won't go into details as I don't want to spoil it but it fitted all together. Let me say I was never into these "Team" camps - Edward or Jacob. I didn't think they were needed. The story is about Bella & Edward, so I never saw Jacob as anything more as a good friend/brother figure. The fact HE didn't see that was just part of the story arc.

All in all, it's about discovery and about family. And the great thing about this series is that it has another generation of teenage girls reading again & making it cool.

So that was my reward book. Now to my next reward choice - Sizzle, Seduce & Simmer edited by Marion Lennox. It's a selection of stories & recipes from Australian Romance Authors. It has been waiting ever so patiently for ages. So instead of chapters it would be the snippets from this book.

Really looking forward to it!

2010...slow start & January Harlequin Challenge

Off to a slow start.

2 books & 1 graphic novel read so far. Have so many books in different stages of reading but it's been a busy month personally & so reading has taken a back seat.

Having said that, I updated my lists as I can use the same book in different challenges and Harlequin has their January challenge, which is to read books with locations around the world that you need a plane or boat to get to.

Harlequin's commitment to the National Family Literacy Centre has ended but I will continue to do the challenges.

Oh and you have to read Nikki Logan's debut book Lights, Camera...Kiss The Boss (Harlequin Romance). It is just fantastic.

Again, this is Suzi Love's fault *grin*. This is a great challenge as it considers everything with an ISBN as a book - hence all the graphic novels, YA, childrens books will be counted as 1 each (unlike Harlequin where a book equals roughly 50K). And therefore I will have more chance to reach the 100 rather than lumping them together.

Another reading challenge - Support Your Local Library

I have Suzi Love to thank for bringing this challenge to my attention. What it does is combine my love of books with supporting my local library. As a former librarian, I know how important libraries are to people. I've been going to the library ever since I was a child - I did stop for awhile due to the CFS - but I'm back.

I've decided to do the Just My Size challenge - which is to borrow and read 50 books from the library. Hmmm.... might be a tall order but that's my aim. But then again if I borrow 25 books, I can complete the Mini Challenge.

And I can combine the titles with other challenges, so there will definitely be overlap.

I will be adding the books to this post as I go along.

Welcome to my new blogsite called 'Eleni's Library'. Since I was writing so much about reading in Eleni's Taverna, I decided to start a new blog and have the majority of the reading related posts and widgets here.

I have an overview of my 2009 reading at Eleni's Taverna and a widget on the sidebar that you may be interested to look at.

I'm not going to repeat the same information here. I'll start brand new with 2010 including reading challenges - Harlequin Book Challenge, & Book Chick City Speculative Fiction Challenge.

My personal goal is to beat the 70 books I read last year. But of course I have to be realistic with life. I did enjoy the variety I read in 2009, so I will continue to do that.
